FG to Release Report on Fuel Subsidy Savings Soon

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Wale Edun, announced plans to publicly disclose a comprehensive report on the utilization of funds saved from the removal of fuel and foreign exchange subsidies. This assurance was made during the 7th Africa Emerging Markets Forum in Abuja.

Edun acknowledged public concerns regarding the lack of visible benefits from these reforms, stating that Nigerians deserve answers about the subsidy savings. He emphasized the government's commitment to transparency, promising a detailed analysis of the expenditures linked to these savings in the coming days.

The removal of these subsidies is noted to represent approximately five percent of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), marking a significant fiscal reform. Edun explained that while financial savings were a focus, the primary aim was to correct economic distortions and establish a sustainable fiscal framework.

He mentioned that part of the generated resources has been allocated to debt servicing, social intervention programs, and the implementation of a new N70,000 minimum wage, as well as support for over 1.5 million students through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
