Nigeria to Release Report on Fuel Subsidy Savings Soon

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, has committed to publishing a detailed report on the utilization of savings from the removal of fuel and foreign exchange subsidies.
This announcement was made on Thursday during the 7th Africa Emerging Markets Forum in Abuja, in response to concerns from Indermit Gill, Chief Economist and Senior Vice-President for Development Economics at the World Bank Group. Gill highlighted that many Nigerians are skeptical about whether the benefits of the reforms have improved their living conditions.
Oyedele acknowledged the validity of these concerns and stated that the report would clarify how the savings, which he estimated to be about five percent of Gross Domestic Product, have been allocated. He explained that part of the savings has been absorbed by increased debt servicing costs, the implementation of a new minimum wage, and expanded social programs.
Oyedele defended the government's borrowing practices, emphasizing that increased revenue does not eliminate the need for borrowing when expenditures exceed income.
