Federal Government Launches Approved Textbooks with QR Codes

The Federal Government has released a list of approved textbooks for Primary 1, Primary 4, Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS 1), and Senior Secondary School 1 (SS 1), which now includes unique QR-based tracking codes. This initiative, led by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, aims to enhance the identification, monitoring, and tracking of instructional materials.

The release comes despite an ongoing legal challenge from the Nigerian Publishers Association (NPA), which filed a suit in August 2026 at the Federal High Court in Ibadan against the Federal Government and the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC). The NPA opposes the government's textbook ranking policy, labeling it "obnoxious" and expressing concerns about its financial implications for publishers.

The ranking exercise will be implemented in phases, with the second phase covering additional textbooks for Primary 2, Primary 5, JSS 2, and SS 2.
