FIFA Abandons Controversial World Cup Stake Proposal

FIFA has officially abandoned its proposal to sell stakes in the FIFA World Cup and other major competitions to private investors after facing significant opposition from football stakeholders, including threats of boycotts from several continental football confederations. FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced the decision on his Instagram page, stating that the FIFA Forward Enterprise project would no longer be pursued.

The proposal aimed to generate additional revenue to support football development programs worldwide but became divisive within the global football community. Infantino noted that the project was intended to strengthen FIFA’s member associations and would undergo extensive consultations before final approval.

However, strong resistance from organizations like UEFA, which warned of a boycott of FIFA competitions, and similar opposition from the Asian Football Confederation and the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football, increased pressure on FIFA, leading to the decision to withdraw the proposal.
