FIFA Reveals 2026 World Cup Referee List Amid Debate

FIFA has unveiled the list of referees for the 2026 World Cup, marking a significant expansion to a total of 52 officials, which includes six women. The tournament will take place from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, featuring 48 teams and 104 matches, an increase from the 64 fixtures played in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Pierluigi Collina, FIFA's chief refereeing officer, noted that the larger refereeing team reflects the demands of the new tournament format. The announcement has led to discussions regarding the African shortlist, particularly the omission of prominent referees such as Congolese referee Jean Jacques Ndala, who officiated the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final, and Senegal's Issa Sy and Mali's Boubou Traor.

This controversy follows the AFCON final where Senegal's players protested, leading to Morocco being declared champions. The African representation includes seven central referees, ten assistant referees, and two VAR officials from various countries.
