FIFA Investigates South Africa for Fielding Ineligible Player in World Cup Qualifier

FIFA has initiated a case against South Africa for fielding Teboho Mokoena in a match against Lesotho despite his supposed suspension. Mokoena had received a yellow card in a previous match, making him ineligible for the game against Lesotho.

If found guilty, South Africa could face penalties, including forfeiting the match and possible point deductions, impacting their standing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The South African Football Association (SAFA) has been notified and must respond to the allegations within six days.

The case will be reviewed by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee for a full investigation.
