FIFA to Introduce Major VAR Adjustments for 2026 World Cup

FIFA is set to introduce two significant Video Assistant Referee (VAR) adjustments for the 2026 World Cup, aiming to reduce errors during matches. The adjustments include expanding VAR's scope to allow officials to review decisions on corner kicks and second yellow cards, areas currently off-limits for video intervention.

The changes are intended to ensure that set-piece goals are correctly awarded and to prevent unfair player expulsions. The adjustments were proposed by FIFA to enhance the accuracy of officiating in football matches.

Pierluigi Collina, head of the FIFA Referees' Committee, explained that these changes aim to curb time-wasting tactics and keep the game flowing smoothly. The adjustments will be tested at the World Cup next summer, with a potential trial run at the 2025 Arab Cup.
