Financing and Accountability Crucial for Maternal Health

Dr. Amina Dorayi, the West Central Africa region portfolio director at Pathfinder International, has called for stronger accountability systems and sustainable political commitment among African governments to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes.

This statement was made in anticipation of the high-level policy advocacy dialogue scheduled for March 24, 2026, in Nairobi, which will focus on shaping future maternal and newborn health policies. Dorayi stressed that increasing funding and establishing robust accountability systems are essential for translating resources into quality services for women and children.

Salli Njiri, the regional project director for the Sasa project, noted the rising financial pressures across the region, necessitating a reevaluation of advocacy approaches. Patrick Mugirwa, the regional director of program management at PPD ARO, highlighted the challenges posed by frequent government changes and dwindling resources.

The dialogue will feature country-led advocacy experiences from Kenya, Uganda, Senegal, Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire, and Ethiopia, exploring innovative approaches to domestic resource mobilization and policy reform.
