Fire Destroys Shops, Offices at Takumbo Market in Kano

A fire outbreak swept through a commercial area in Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State on Thursday night, destroying multiple shops and office spaces at what traders call Takumbo Market, situated near First City Monument Bank. The blaze began around 10 p.m. and continued into Friday morning, consuming structures that housed retailers selling home appliances, furniture, carpets, and related goods. Preliminary reports attribute the fire to an electrical spark, though investigations remain ongoing.

The Kano State Fire Service received a distress call at 10:54 p.m. and deployed firefighting personnel from its metropolitan headquarters to the scene. Firefighters arrived to find a single-story building already engulfed in flames, with the fire spreading to adjoining commercial premises. Emergency responders worked through the night to contain the blaze and prevent it from reaching nearby structures. No deaths have been reported from the incident.

The extent of property loss remains uncertain across available accounts. One source estimates that nearly 100 temporary shops were destroyed, while traders describe the damage as among the worst in the market's history.
