NIMET Issues Flood Warning: 9 Safety Tips for Households

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) has predicted an early onset of rainfall and above-normal rainfall volumes for 2026, prompting the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) to issue a critical warning in their annual flood outlook. Recent data from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) indicates that flooding is a significant concern in Nigerian cities, with blocked gutters identified as one of the primary causes.

To address this issue, households across Nigeria are urged to undertake nine non-negotiable actions, including fixing and removing silt and plastic waste from gutters to ensure water flows freely in main canals. This proactive approach is essential to reduce the risk of flooding, especially in areas such as Lagos, Delta, Bayelsa, and Kogi, which are particularly vulnerable to flooding disasters.
