NiHSA Warns of Flood Risks to Schools, Urges Climate Education

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) has issued a flood warning indicating that more than 8,000 communities and approximately 4,500 schools across 15 states in Nigeria are at risk of flooding between September 19 and 25, 2026. The affected states include Imo, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Benue, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Edo, Enugu, Bayelsa, Kogi, Abia, Taraba, Rivers, and Lagos.

Flooding poses a significant threat to education, disrupting classrooms, displacing families, damaging infrastructure, and exposing children and teachers to health risks. In Akwa Ibom, nine local government areas have been identified as vulnerable, with 323 schools at risk.

Anambra has 1,308 schools exposed, Ebonyi has 1,064, and Imo has 1,022. The article stresses the need for Nigeria to integrate flood preparedness into education planning and emphasizes that climate education should equip learners with knowledge about risks and emergency procedures.
