SERC Warns of Global Supply Chains Impacting Nigeria's Trade

The Sea Empowerment and Research Center (SERC) has issued a warning regarding the impact of integrated global supply chains on Nigeria's traditional business model, where foreign manufacturers produce goods, and Nigerian importers, clearing agents, wholesalers, and retailers facilitate distribution. This warning follows a protest by traders at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex on September 15, 2026, concerning the rising involvement of Chinese businesses in direct retail and domestic distribution.

SERC emphasized that this issue transcends a mere market dispute and signals a significant shift in international commerce and competition in Nigeria. The organization noted that foreign businesses are increasingly able to streamline production, financing, shipping, and distribution, thereby reducing reliance on traditional intermediaries.

SERC questioned why Nigerian enterprises remain focused on trading and distribution rather than leveraging the country's resources and market potential for production and value addition. The group urged a transition towards an economy that prioritizes manufacturing and exports, utilizing platforms like the African Continental Free Trade Area and Nigeria's Free Trade Zone system.
