France Offers Fee-Free Citizenship for Military Service Members

France has announced specific categories of individuals who can apply for French citizenship without incurring a fee, primarily targeting those who have served in the French armed forces. A foreigner who has served in the French military can obtain a resident card if their stay in France is regular.

They may also be eligible for French nationality through a proposal from the Minister of Defence. To qualify, applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria: service in a combatant unit of the French army or an allied army, a minimum of three years under contract with a certificate of good conduct, or participation in the French Interior Forces (FFI).

Additionally, members of the French armed forces can be naturalised if they were wounded during operational engagements. The application process varies slightly for current military personnel, requiring submission to military authorities, who then forward the application to the relevant administrative body within eight days.
