France Faces Wildfires Amid Severe European Heatwave

France is currently facing significant wildfires as a heatwave sweeps across Europe, with temperatures anticipated to peak at 44°C in parts of Italy. This marks the third consecutive day of firefighting efforts in southern Paris.

The heatwave has already led to a record of 10,000 excess deaths across Europe and Britain during two previous record-breaking heatwaves in May and late June. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez and Italian meteorologists have indicated that a high-pressure system over Sardinia is expected to intensify the heat, pushing temperatures inland to 39°C in Florence and 38°C in Rome.

The heatwave is also accompanied by fine sand blowing from North Africa. In Spain, efforts are ongoing to identify victims of a deadly wildfire in the popular holiday region of Almeria, which has claimed at least 13 lives, with 10 others still missing.
