APC Faces Crisis as 2027 Primaries Begin Amid Tensions

A fresh crisis has erupted within the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the party commences its nationwide primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections. Intense lobbying and protests have surfaced behind the scenes, leading to unsettled state chapters and a collapse of consensus talks.

Rival camps have rejected attempts by party leaders to settle candidate arrangements, heightening fears of unresolved disputes that could weaken the APC's structure. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is intensifying reconciliation efforts to prevent further disunity.

He has urged party members to embrace peace and fairness during the primaries, emphasizing that every contest will have winners and losers. Tinubu warned against returning to hostile political practices and called for inclusivity, particularly for women and youth.

He also directed security agencies to remain professional and avoid interfering in the internal processes of the party. The primaries are expected to culminate in presidential primaries scheduled for May 25, 2026, under the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.
