FG to Release Breakdown of Fuel Subsidy Savings Soon

The Federal Government of Nigeria has pledged to publish a detailed breakdown of how savings from the removal of fuel and foreign exchange subsidies have been utilized. This commitment was made by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr.

Taiwo Oyedele, during the 7th Africa Emerging Markets Forum in Abuja. The pledge follows concerns expressed by Indermit Gill, Chief Economist and Senior Vice-President for Development Economics at the World Bank Group, who noted that many Nigerians are unconvinced that the reforms have improved their living conditions.

Oyedele acknowledged the validity of these concerns and stated that a detailed analysis would be released within days. He indicated that the combined impact of the subsidy removals amounted to about five percent of Gross Domestic Product and explained that part of the savings had been absorbed by increased debt servicing costs and new social programs.

He defended the government's borrowing despite improved revenues, emphasizing that higher revenue does not eliminate financing needs.
