Infantino Sets Deadline for FIFA Investment Proposal Approval

Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, is seeking approval from FIFA’s 211 member associations by September 19 for a controversial proposal to create a £16 billion subsidiary. This plan involves external financiers controlling 20% of the subsidiary while FIFA retains commercial and decision-making control over its competitions, including the World Cups.

The proposal aims to generate significant funding, with FIFA claiming that the value of its assets and intellectual property could unlock up to £8 billion in additional funding compared to £2.1 billion if no investment is pursued. If approved, each member association could potentially access £32 million in Fast Forward and FIFA Forward grants, totaling over £4 billion by 2028.

The proposal faces opposition from UEFA and two other continental governing bodies, which complicates its acceptance among FIFA members.
