Global Experts Back HYPREP's Niger Delta Cleanup Efforts

Global experts have shown support for the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) during a debrief session at HYPREP's headquarters in Port Harcourt. The delegation, led by Dr.

Isaac Osuoka, was impressed with HYPREP's progress in implementing recommendations from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) regarding Ogoniland. Key achievements include the construction of a specialist hospital, mangrove restoration projects, and the provision of potable water to 49 communities, with ongoing projects reaching 90-96% completion.

HYPREP's mandate extends beyond Ogoniland, aiming to develop remediation models for the entire Niger Delta. Prof.

Nenibarini Zabbei, HYPREP's project coordinator, noted the agency's community-driven approach and the engagement of 7,000 community workers, with 3,000 beneficiaries receiving training. The delegation also toured various HYPREP project sites, highlighting the urgent need for broader interventions to address environmental degradation across the Niger Delta.
