Governors Consult on Constitutional Framework for State Police

Nigerian governors are engaging in consultations with Attorneys-General from all 36 states to develop a constitutional framework for the establishment of state police. This initiative is a response to increasing pressure to tackle insecurity across the country.

The discussions took place during the Nigeria Governors' Forum (NGF) meeting held in Abuja, where Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun addressed journalists. He emphasized the need for a strong constitutional foundation to prevent abuse and protect citizens' rights.

The governors aim to refine their proposals and present a unified position to the National Assembly. Earlier, on June 10, the House of Representatives passed a constitutional amendment bill seeking to legalize state police, which is currently under review by the Senate.

The governors also discussed other pressing issues, including national nutrition challenges and energy supply improvements, reaffirming their commitment to enhancing outcomes in these areas.
