Expert Warns of Mental Health Crisis Due to Neglect of Psychologists in Nigeria

Dr. Charles Umeh from the University of Lagos warns that Nigeria's failure to recognize and support clinic psychologists is exacerbating the country's mental health challenges.

With fewer than 500 clinic psychologists in Nigeria, the lack of early intervention and proper care is leading to a growing mental health crisis affecting millions. The neglect of psychologists at foundational levels results in minor conditions escalating into chronic mental illnesses.

The absence of structured psychological support is also linked to the rise in substance abuse among young people, posing a significant risk to the nation's mental health.
