CPTA Demands Thorough Inquiry into 33 Miners' Deaths

The Centre for Peace, Transparency and Accountability (CPTA) has raised significant concerns regarding the investigation into the deaths of 33 suspected illegal miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State. Comrade Patrick Onomuodeke, the Executive Director of CPTA, urged the Minister of Interior to address issues surrounding the investigative panel’s proceedings and findings.
He emphasized the necessity for a transparent and impartial investigation to ascertain the circumstances of the deaths and assign responsibility. CPTA expressed apprehension about the participation of Deji Adeyanju in the committee, questioning his attendance record and level of involvement.
The organization also highlighted concerns regarding operational authorization for the NSCDC's actions and called for accountability at all command levels. Furthermore, CPTA requested clarification on allegations that the detention cell where the miners died had been tampered with to destroy evidence.
Onomuodeke insisted that the deaths should not be treated as a matter of convenience or political expediency.
