MOTION Urges Withdrawal of Controversial NGO Bill

The Movement for the Transformation of Nigeria (MOTION) has called on the National Assembly to withdraw the proposed Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Regulation Bill, warning that it could undermine civic freedoms and weaken Nigeria’s democratic institutions. In a statement signed by Hauwa Mustapha, Convener; Christopher Isiguzo, Co-Convener; and Blessing Alims, MOTION rejected the bill entirely, arguing that reforms affecting civil society should enhance, not restrict, NGO operations.

The group emphasized the vital roles civil society organizations play in various sectors, including humanitarian assistance, education, and human rights advocacy. MOTION expressed concerns that the proposed legislation could erode NGO independence by imposing unnecessary restrictions on registration, governance, funding, and advocacy.

They highlighted that existing laws already regulate NGOs and called for effective enforcement instead of new restrictive measures. MOTION urged the National Assembly to conduct transparent consultations with civil society and protect constitutional rights to freedom of expression and association, asserting that a vibrant civil society is essential for democracy and national development.
