Ondo Health Commissioner Reports 60 Hospitalized from Poisonous Drinks

The Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Banji Ajaka, confirmed that at least 60 individuals are still hospitalized due to the consumption of suspected poisonous herbal drinks in Odigbo Local Government Area. Tragically, 29 residents from the communities of Araromi-Obu and Odigbo town have died after ingesting the substance.

Mr. Taiwo Adegoroye, Chairman of the Odigbo Local Government, reported that the fatalities included eight from Araromi-Obu and 16 from Odigbo, with the death toll rising to 29. Dr. Ajaka noted that 95 percent of the affected individuals were males aged between 16 and 55 years.

The victims exhibited severe symptoms such as intense headaches, sharp body pains, and respiratory distress. Laboratory tests are underway to identify the toxic substance involved, with 36 clinical samples sent for examination.

Ajaka cautioned residents against consuming unverified alcoholic drinks and urged community leaders to report any unusual health incidents promptly.
