Local Grinding Machines Linked to Health Risks in Nigeria
Dr. Jummai Adamu Tutuwa, a director at the Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO), disclosed that high rates of organ failure and cardiovascular diseases are associated with local grinding machines.
A study conducted by FIIRO scientists in 2013 found that grinding machines used for processing food items such as tomatoes, peppers, onions, and melon seeds in Lagos contain trace heavy metals including lead, copper, chromium, nickel, cadmium, and manganese, as well as non-heavy metals like calcium, magnesium, zinc, and iron. Prolonged consumption of food contaminated with these metals may contribute to increased cases of cardiovascular diseases and organ failure, even among young adults.
Dr. Tutuwa noted that contaminant levels in some instances exceed the safety standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
She emphasized the need for stronger regulatory enforcement and public awareness to curb contamination and reduce the burden of diseases nationwide. To address these challenges, FIIRO is designing stainless steel pepper grinding machines to reduce contamination risks and plans to collaborate with stakeholders to promote safer alternatives.
