Paris Hospitals Struggle with Heat Wave Challenges

During a record heat wave in June 2023, Paris-Saclay Hospital faced significant challenges in treating patients suffering from heat exposure. Emergency medics resorted to using ice from a fast-food restaurant and supermarkets due to a lack of an ice-making machine.

Director Cédric Lussiez acknowledged the hospital's unpreparedness, stating, “We thought we were ready. We were not actually.” The surge in patients began on June 20, with Dr. Nicolas Gonzales reporting a flood of cases, including heart attacks and dehydration.

The hospital, while equipped with air conditioning, struggled as older facilities lacked adequate cooling. To address these issues, Lussiez is implementing renovations and moving departments to better-equipped locations.

In response to the crisis, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced a 100-million-euro ($114 million) investment in cooling systems for hospitals, recognizing the need for improved infrastructure to handle future heat waves exacerbated by climate change.
