House of Representatives Proposes National Renewable Energy Authority

The House of Representatives is taking a significant step towards establishing the National Authority for Renewable Energy (NARE), which will serve as Nigeria’s main regulatory body for renewable energy. The Bill was sponsored by Mr Afam Victor Ogene, the Member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency and Chairman of the House Committee on Renewable Energy.
During the debate, Mr Ogene emphasized the need for institutional consolidation to centralize the regulation and supervision of renewable energy under one dedicated authority. He also proposed that 40% of the annual funds from the Rural Electrification Fund be allocated to NARE to support renewable energy development.
Mr Ogene argued that Nigeria needs to explore alternatives beyond grid expansion to address its electricity challenges. Following the debate, the House unanimously adopted the Bill for Second Reading and referred it to the relevant Committee for further legislative scrutiny, which will include provisions for the transfer of personnel, assets, and ongoing projects.
