Tensions Rise Between Oyo Governor Makinde and Alaafin

The relationship between Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has deteriorated from a previously cordial association. Initially, Makinde played a significant role in the selection of the new monarch, leading to public displays of warmth and cooperation.

However, tensions escalated when Makinde announced a rotational chairmanship involving the Alaafin, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, and the Soun of Ogbomosoland, with Oba Rashidi Ladoja as the first chairman. The Alaafin's palace contested this claim, stating that Oba Owoade did not meet with Makinde nor endorse the arrangement, which was further emphasized by the Alaafin's absence at the council's inauguration in January.

Additionally, the elevation of several Baales and high chiefs to crown-wearing Obas by the Makinde administration has disrupted traditional authority structures in Oyo, contributing to the growing rift between the palace and the government.
