Yeni Kuti Defends Fela's Legacy, Advises Against Comparisons with Contemporary Artists

Yeni Kuti, daughter of the late Afrobeat icon Fela Anikulapo Kuti, addressed comparisons between her father and modern musicians, asserting that such comparisons fail to grasp the true essence of Fela's legacy. Speaking in an interview on Arise TV after receiving a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award for Fela at the 2026 Grammy Awards, Yeni highlighted that Fela's influence remains undeniable nearly three decades after his passing.

She discouraged artists from undermining Fela's impact by attempting to compare themselves to him, stating that legends like Fela should be respected and left alone. Yeni emphasized the importance of healthy competition among contemporaries rather than measuring oneself against a deceased legend like Fela.

Her comments come in the wake of controversies sparked by singer Wizkid's remarks and ongoing comparisons between artists like Wizkid and Fela, which drew criticism from Seun Kuti, Fela's son.
