HYPREP Conference on Ogoniland Environmental Restoration

The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) is set to host a conference on environmental restoration in Ogoniland on May 26, 2026, at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, Nigeria. The conference is expected to attract diplomats, donor agencies, development partners, environmental experts, and stakeholders from the private sector.

Emmanuel Deeyah, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Ogoni Trust Fund, will engage in discussions aimed at deepening strategic partnerships to support ongoing environmental remediation and sustainable development efforts in Ogoniland. The conference will explore collaborative pathways to accelerate environmental cleanup, public health interventions, and livelihood restoration, including portable water projects and mangrove restoration.

Professor Nenibarini Zabbei, HYPREP Project Coordinator, emphasized the conference's importance in strengthening international cooperation and mobilizing technical support for environmental sustainability. Mr.

Balarab Abba Lawal, the Minister of Environment, is expected to deliver opening remarks, while Dutch Ambassador to Nigeria, Bengt van Loosdrecht, will present a goodwill message. HYPREP commenced operations in 2016 and has since completed remediation across 50 lots, with phase two ongoing across 39 lots covering 125 hectares.
