His comments come amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly following coordinated strikes by the U.S. and Israel on Iranian targets, which prompted Iran to retaliate with missile and drone attacks on American allied facilities in the Gulf region.

Trump remarked, "I really don’t care" about Iran's involvement, suggesting that the country would be "badly defeated." The uncertainty surrounding Iran's participation has been echoed by Mehdi Taj, the president of Iran's football federation, who mentioned that the current security situation could affect the country's plans for the tournament. The 2026 World Cup will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and Iran had previously qualified for the tournament, scheduled to face teams such as New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt during the group stage.
