Taiwo Awoniyi Reflects on His Tough Football Journey

Taiwo Awoniyi, an Ilorin-born striker for Nottingham Forest, recounted his arduous journey to professional football during a lengthy interview with the club's media. Awoniyi began pursuing his football dream at the age of seven at the Ilorin Unicorn Academy, which involved a daily one-hour trek to training.

He faced numerous challenges, including repairing worn-out football boots and financial constraints that made transportation difficult. Despite these hardships, he achieved his dream of becoming a Premier League footballer.

Awoniyi burst onto the scene in the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup, scoring four goals, leading to Liverpool signing him for £400,000 two years later. After loan spells at seven different clubs, he made his first-team breakthrough at Union Berlin, which led to Nottingham Forest acquiring him for a club record fee of £17 million in 2022.

Despite suffering a life-threatening abdominal injury last year, he has scored 19 goals and provided 4 assists in 85 competitive appearances for Forest.
