Wike's 2016 Threat to INEC Official Resurfaces, Sparks Outrage

A 2016 audio recording of Nyesom Wike, the then Governor of Rivers State, has resurfaced, in which he allegedly threatens an official from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). This development has sparked outrage and condemnation from civil society organizations and media groups.

The audio, first reported by Sahara Reporters in December 2016, captures Wike in a telephone conversation discussing the coordination of payments to INEC officials to influence legislative rerun elections in Rivers State. During the conversation, Wike reportedly issued threats to an INEC official who refused to sign a result sheet, insisting that the official comply with his demands.

This resurfacing of the audio has intensified scrutiny of Wike's past conduct, especially in light of his recent comments during a media briefing in Abuja, where he addressed concerns about Nigeria's political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
