Imo Kidnappers Demand ₦950M–₦1B for 19–20 Abducted NYSC Graduates

Prospective corps members from Oyo State were abducted on October 1 along Owerri-Onitsha Road; families given 24-hour deadline to pay ransom.

Two buses run by Uko Akwa Ibom Motors Nigeria Limited fell victim to an armed assault on Thursday, October 1, carrying prospective National Youth Service Corps members headed toward South-East and South-South orientation facilities. The incident unfolded along the Owerri-Onitsha Road near Umunoha in Imo State.

These vehicles had left Ibadan on Wednesday evening en route to Abia and Akwa Ibom orientation programs. The kidnappers have since initiated contact with the families of captives, demanding ₦50 million for each person held.

Accounts regarding victim numbers fluctuate—cited as either 19 or 20 individuals—resulting in total ransom demands of either ₦950 million or ₦1 billion. According to certain reports, the abductors have imposed a 24-hour deadline for payment.

Managing Director Isiah Akpan of Uko Akwa Ibom Motors has acknowledged the kidnapping and supplied information concerning the journey's progression. Family members have sought backing from community dignitaries and law enforcement authorities.

Rescue coordination has involved the Olubadan of Ibadanland as well as the state's Commissioner of Police, reflecting significant state-level engagement with this matter. The kidnapping transpired at a critical juncture when recent graduates were completing their journey to fulfill compulsory national service obligations.

Rescue attempts are underway via security agencies, yet public communication regarding negotiations' progress or the hostages' welfare remains unavailable in recent announcements.
