Nigerian Aviation Industry Faces Safety Concerns Due to Unruly Passenger Behavior

Former aviation commissioner Yakubu Dati highlighted the increasing incidents of unruly passenger behavior compromising safety at Nigerian airports over the past decade. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reported disruptive passenger events occurring at a rate of 1 in every 568 flights, with issues like verbal abuse and non-compliance posing serious challenges to aviation safety.

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) emphasized the need for member states to integrate behavior risk management into safety frameworks. Dati stressed the importance of conflict management, negotiation, and mediation within the aviation sector to enhance safety and regulatory compliance.

The discussion took place during the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Safety Week event in Lagos.
