Independent Regulator Introduces Stricter Ownership Tests for English Clubs to Ensure Responsible Ownership

The Independent Football Regulator (IFR) has announced stricter ownership tests for English football clubs to prevent unsuitable individuals from controlling clubs. The enhanced criteria include expanded background checks, both domestically and internationally, to evaluate honesty, integrity, financial soundness, and appropriate skills of prospective club owners and executives.

This move aims to promote responsible ownership across the 116 regulated football clubs in England. The proposed regime seeks to strengthen protection against illicit finance and criminal funding entering the sport.

While existing owners and executives will require immediate approval under the new system, the regulator retains the authority to intervene if concerns arise regarding current club leadership. The IFR is consulting widely to gather information for effective implementation.
