Countries Reject Tinubu's Ambassadorial Nominees

The Indian government, along with several other countries, has declined to accept ambassadorial nominees put forward by Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The rejection stems from concerns regarding the limited time left in Tinubu's administration, which is set to end in May 2027.

Diplomatic sources indicate that India is hesitant to grant approval for nominees, as it discourages accepting ambassadors from administrations with less than two years remaining in office. This situation particularly affects Muhammad Dahiru, who has been assigned as Nigeria's ambassador to New Delhi.

The Indian authorities have indicated that they will not grant the necessary diplomatic approval until formal agreements are established. The Nigerian government recently withdrew ambassadors from 100 foreign missions, leaving many posts vacant and complicating the nomination process.

The delay in nominations, made in September 2023, has led to concerns that the next presidential elections in January 2027 may further impact the acceptance of new ambassadors.
