Industries Lose 15% Energy Due to Maintenance Issues

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) revealed that industries are losing 15% of energy due to inadequate maintenance practices, as highlighted in a study assessing 42 industries across four geopolitical zones. The study, conducted by experts including Obafemi Adejumo, identified that weak maintenance cultures and the absence of sub-meter systems contribute to energy wastage.

It noted that compressed air systems account for 25% of energy loss due to leaks, while thermal inefficiencies in steam systems contribute to 30% loss. The food and beverage sector showed success in reducing compressed air leaks by 20%.

The report emphasized the need for manufacturers to adopt ISO 50001 and ISO 14001 standards to institutionalize energy management and resource efficiency. Jacob Oladipo coordinated the project, which aims to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

The findings also pointed out poor water management practices in industries, stressing the importance of top management commitment to close efficiency gaps and reduce operational costs.
