INEC Unveils Timetable for 2027 General Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the timetable and schedule for the 2027 general elections during a press conference in Abuja on Friday. The chairman of INEC, Prof.

Joash Amupitan, criticized earlier reports suggesting that the electoral umpire would release the timetable. According to the announcement, the presidential and national assembly elections are set for February 20, 2027, while the governorship and state assembly elections will take place on March 6, 2027.

This formal release of the election timetable is seen as a significant milestone in Nigeria's democratic journey. Amupitan emphasized the importance of timely actions to ensure the integrity and effectiveness of the electoral process, addressing challenges that may arise from logistical failures.

The announcement also noted that the tenures of various elected officials will expire on May 28, 2027, and that the electoral process must be initiated in accordance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and the amended Electoral Act of 2022.
