INEC and CSOs Trained on AI Risks for 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), civil society organizations (CSOs), and journalists participated in training focused on artificial intelligence and its implications for Nigeria's 2027 general elections. This initiative was part of efforts to prepare key institutions for the opportunities and risks associated with AI.
The training occurred during the two-day AI Democracy Forum in Abuja, themed “Will Algorithms Determine the 2027 Vote? Safeguarding Nigeria’s 2027 General Election in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.” Organized by Yiaga Africa, the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development, and the Datahpyte Foundation, the forum brought together various stakeholders, including election experts and security agencies.
Samson Itodo, the executive director of Yiaga Africa, stated that the training included specialized masterclasses tailored to different groups. INEC officials received training from Microsoft on AI applications in election administration, while journalists were trained by Google on reporting safeguards.
CSOs and election observers were trained by the National Democratic Institute on monitoring generative AI use during elections.
