INEC Flags 268 Voter Records for AI-Generated Photos

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has flagged 268 voter records over suspected artificial intelligence-generated photographs and other irregularities found in the preliminary Register of Voters. INEC's automated verification system identified these questionable entries, which are currently under further examination.
Lawrence Bayode, INEC’s Director of Information and Communication Technology, stated that the commission is utilizing its Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) to investigate the flagged records. Bayode indicated that some individuals may have exploited a special registration arrangement for persons living with disabilities, leading to the creation of questionable voter profiles.
He clarified that genuine photographs enhanced by AI applications would not disqualify voters, but entirely AI-generated images would be removed. The issue gained attention after screenshots of suspicious voter photographs circulated on social media, particularly in Edo State.
