INEC launches probe into AI-generated photos found in voter register

Nigeria's electoral commission has launched an inquiry into artificial intelligence-generated photographs discovered within its preliminary voters' register. On October 26, 2026, the digital version became available to the public following a countrywide exhibition of this same preliminary roll.

From October 9 to 15, Registration Areas displayed the register nationwide, enabling citizens to examine records, submit claims and file objections. Problematic registration entries had been spotted and set aside during that physical exhibition phase, meaning the online publication failed to capture INEC's ongoing efforts at data-cleanup.

The electoral body committed to fixing all substantiated anomalies before final approval occurs on December 15, 2026. Social media discussions and public concern regarding suspected AI-generated voter photos also reached leadership's attention.

INEC is examining the origins of these questionable images, investigating what technical problems or system failures in voter registration may have contributed. The commission stressed that copies now circulating remain preliminary in status and will be subjected to thorough review and corrective steps.

Once the probe yields confirmed results, appropriate action will follow, officials indicated. Mohammed Kudu Haruna, heading the Information and Voter Education Committee, conveyed INEC's stance on the matter.

This examination must conclude prior to the December 15, 2026 final certification deadline, with the commission promising that a thoroughly cleaned and validated register will reach stakeholders before the 2027 general election.
