INEC Opens Online Portal to 2027 Voter Register After Public Pressure

Concerns raised by Nigerians and election observers about restricted access during the October 9 to 15, 2026 physical display prompted the Independent National Electoral Commission to establish a digital platform for voters' preliminary register prior to the 2027 general election. Mohammed Kudu Haruna, heading INEC's Information and Voter Education Committee, announced this action through a statement delivered on Monday.

During October 9-15, INEC carried out a physical display at Registration Areas across the nation. Following this exercise, stakeholders pressed for improved access to the voters' roll, citing challenges many Nigerians face reaching registration areas in person.

Digital access through online publication enables citizens to review and verify their registration data from any device with internet connectivity, thereby removing these barriers to participation. The Final Register of Voters for 2027 will receive completion and certification on December 15, 2026.

Over approximately two months following the preliminary display, this schedule provides INEC adequate space to process objections, implement corrections, and conduct verification checks ahead of the official roll's release. This date marks a critical step within INEC's electoral preparation work for the 2027 cycle.

Electoral commissions face growing calls for stronger openness and citizen participation in registration activities. INEC's choice to digitise registration data reflects this evolving expectation.
