INEC Identifies 264,798 Voters with Disabilities for 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has identified 264,798 voters with disabilities across Nigeria as part of its initiative to enhance their participation in the upcoming 2027 general elections. INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, represented by National Commissioner Rhoda Gumus, announced this figure during a national strategy engagement with the leadership of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) and Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) in Abuja.

The breakdown includes 137,487 in a general PWD category, 13,080 visually impaired, 9,299 with hearing impairment, 30,561 with albinism, and 19,430 with physical impairment, among others. INEC emphasized the importance of sustained voter education and targeted mobilization to ensure that eligible voters with disabilities are included in the electoral process.

The commission seeks to strengthen collaboration with JONAPWD and OPDs to identify obstacles faced by voters with disabilities and improve access to electoral information, communication, and voting facilities.
