INEC Warns Media Against Unofficial Results, AI Deepfakes Ahead of 2027 Vote

The Independent National Electoral Commission has issued new media guidelines ahead of the 2027 general elections, directing newsroom leaders and editors to strengthen verification processes and refrain from releasing election results before official declaration. INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan delivered the directive through a statement released by the commission's chief press secretary, Adedayo Oketola.

The commission specifically cautioned against publishing or amplifying privately compiled results before INEC's formal announcement. According to INEC, premature reporting of such figures could produce competing narratives, confuse voters, and erode confidence in the legitimacy of election outcomes.

The warning addresses a recurring challenge in Nigerian elections where media outlets and political actors sometimes circulate alternative result compilations that contradict official tallies. INEC also flagged artificial intelligence-driven deepfakes and synthetic disinformation as emerging threats to electoral integrity.

The commission argued that AI-generated false content poses an existential risk to public trust and democratic stability. Officials called on newsrooms to deploy digital verification tools and rigorous fact-checking protocols to identify and prevent the spread of manipulated audio, video, and text designed to deceive voters or delegitimize results.

The guidelines reflect broader global concerns about election security in an age of advanced digital manipulation technology. By framing these instructions as media responsibilities rather than regulatory mandates, INEC has positioned newsrooms as partners in protecting the 2027 electoral process.
