Insecurity Drives Nigerians Abroad Amid Rising Violence

Insecurity in South-East Nigeria has prompted a wave of migration as citizens flee to other countries seeking safety. The region has faced severe economic hardship and violence, primarily attributed to non-state actors, including kidnappers and armed groups.

Since 2019, the situation has deteriorated, with numerous high-profile kidnappings and assassinations reported. Anambra State has been particularly affected, with 14 reported cases of political assassinations between 2022 and 2024, including attacks on former Senator Ifeanyi Uba and Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

The violence has also impacted local governance, as seen in the brutal murder of Chris Ohizu, a local government chairman in Imo State, and the abduction of prominent oil executive Obasi Lawson. The fear of violence has led individuals like Kessington Okori to relocate abroad after surviving multiple kidnapping attempts.

The ongoing insecurity continues to cripple the local economy and exacerbate the plight of residents in the region.
