IPCR's Joseph Ochogwu Calls for Stronger Peace Legislation

The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR), directed by Joseph Ochogwu, called on the National Assembly to strengthen legislation that fosters social cohesion and conflict-sensitive governance to address Nigeria's escalating security and social issues. This appeal was made during a media briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, in anticipation of the 2026 International Day of Peace, which is celebrated on September 21.

Ochogwu emphasized the importance of prioritizing peace-building in government budgets and policies and urged security agencies to adopt non-kinetic, community-centered conflict resolution strategies. He highlighted the 2026 theme, “Investing in Peace for Everyone, Everywhere and Every Day,” which shifts the perception of peace from merely the absence of war to a sustained investment process.

Ochogwu identified various interconnected challenges facing Nigeria, including violent extremism, farmer-herder conflicts, and economic pressures, asserting that peace is essential for food security, education, and healthcare. He also stressed the need for stronger grassroots governance to enhance conflict prevention and resolution.
