Mojtaba Khamenei Named Iran's New Supreme Leader

Mojtaba Khamenei has been appointed as Iran's new supreme leader after the death of his father, Ali Khamenei, who served in this role since 1989. The announcement was made by Iran's Assembly of Experts on a Sunday, following Ali Khamenei's reported killing on February 28 during a joint U.S.-Israeli air operation targeting leadership sites in Tehran.

The Assembly of Experts urged Iranian citizens, particularly the elite, intellectuals, and seminaries, to support the new leader to maintain national unity. Mojtaba Khamenei, a mid-ranking cleric, is viewed as a frontrunner for leadership despite concerns about hereditary succession within Iran's political and religious establishment.

His selection comes amid ongoing regional tensions following his father's death, which has intensified speculation about the future of Iran's leadership. Notably, Donald Trump publicly opposed the prospect of Mojtaba becoming Iran's leader, describing him as a "lightweight" and suggesting he would not play a significant role in determining the country's leadership.
