Hackers Target Israelis with Spyware Disguised as App

A new cyber espionage campaign has been uncovered, targeting Israelis with spyware disguised as a safety alert application. Swiss cybersecurity firm Acronis reported that hackers are attempting to trick users into installing a malicious Android app that sends fraudulent text messages, appearing to be from the Israel Defense Forces' Home Front Command.

The messages urge recipients to download an updated version of the official application, claiming an imminent rocket attack. The hackers behind this campaign are believed to be connected to the Arid Viper threat actor group, which has previously targeted Israeli military personnel and individuals in Egypt and Palestine.

This campaign follows recent U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iranian targets, reinforcing the ongoing geopolitical tensions. Acronis described the ad campaign as a demonstration of how cyber attacks are weaponized during crises.

Despite the heightened cybersecurity activity, analysts indicate that digital attacks have not yet played a decisive role in the ongoing conflict escalation.
