Iranian Football Delegation Denied Entry to Canada

The Iranian football delegation, led by Mehdi Taj of the Iranian Football Federation, was denied entry into Canada, resulting in their absence from the FIFA congress scheduled in Vancouver ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite holding valid visas, the group encountered issues with Canadian immigration officials, who described the situation as unacceptable.

The Canadian authorities reiterated their policy regarding individuals linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which Canada designates as a terrorist organization. Gari Anandasangare, Canada's Minister of Public Safety, previously stated that members associated with the IRGC are not welcome in the country.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed regret over the situation and expected to engage with the Iranian delegation to address the issue of their absence. U.S. politician Marco Rubio indicated that while Iranian players may be allowed to compete, individuals linked to the IRGC would face restrictions.
