Italy's Football Chief Gravina Resigns After World Cup Fail

Gabriel Gravina, the president of Italy's football federation (FIGC), resigned on Thursday after the men's national team failed to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive time. This decision followed a meeting at FIGC headquarters in Rome, where it was revealed that Italy lost to Bosnia and Herzegovina in a penalty shootout, marking another disappointing chapter for the team. Gravina, who has been in office since October 2018, had previously taken over after Carlo Tavecchio stepped down following Italy's first World Cup playoff defeat to Sweden. His resignation also prompted the departure of coach Gennaro Gattuso, who was asked to leave before the end of his contract, which expires in the summer. A vote for a new FIGC president is scheduled for June 22. Gravina's tenure included Italy's triumph in Euro 2020, but recent failures in World Cup qualifications have overshadowed this success, leading to his resignation.
